Servicing of Guitar and Bass Amplifiers

Please note that a service consists of a preset list of preventive maintenance items. Any repairs needing to be carried out will carry an additional cost.

Solid State Amp Service
Solid state amplifiers are more stable than tube amps, but still require maintenance. This will keep the amp in smooth running condition, and help to identify and prolong any unexpected costly breakdowns. If the controls are scratchy sounding or the sound cuts out, it may just need a “tune up”. This includes the following:
- Clean and check input and output jacks.
- Clean and check potentiometers (controls).
- Check fuse size and replace if out of spec.
- Check, clean, and lubricate cooling fan.
- Check, clean and tighten speaker connections.
- Clean inside of chassis.
- Visual inspection of components and circuit board for potential faults.
- Visible solder joints and connectors are visually checked and resoldered if necessary
- Perform Speaker Rub and Buzz Test.
Tube Amp Service
If it's been awhile since your tube amplifier has been serviced, it will most likely benefit from a tune up. High voltage, heat, and age can cause components to change value or fail. If your amplifier seems to have lost tone or power, it needs to be tuned up. This includes the following:
- Clean and check input and output jacks.
- Clean and check potentiometers (controls).
- Check fuse size and replace if out of spec.
- Check, clean and lubricate cooling fan.
- Check, clean and tighten speaker connections.
- Clean inside of chassis.
- Visual inspection of components and circuit board for potential faults.
- Visible solder joints and connectors are visually checked and resoldered if necessary
- Perform Speaker Rub and Buzz Test.
- Check all tubes and replace as necessary. Power tubes are replaced with matched sets. Tubes that test good will not be replaced unless requested by customer. We use JJ tubes unless otherwise requested. We have found these tubes to be high quality and best tone and reliability for the value. Please note—If you wish to provide your own tubes, please bring them in with the amplifier. We will not pull our tubes after we have installed them so you can replace with your own.
- Clean and re-tension tube sockets.
- Adjust power tube bias.
